Pitlochry Golf Club
Pitlochry Golf Club is located in the North of Pitlochry just 45 km north-west of Perth. From the south, the golf club is accessible from Edinburgh and Glasgow and in the north from Inverness. It can be reached from these major cities via the A9.
Golf World Magazine has listed Pitlochry Golf Club as one of the “14 Scottish Hidden Gems.” And it’s fast becoming known as one of Scotland’s best inland courses. Surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Grampian Mountains, it is famed for its scenic golf course. Its picturesque backdrop has also earned itself the title as the “Switzerland of Scotland” from Golf Illustrated published in 1951.
History
Pitlochry Golf Club was built through the initiatives of Colonel Butter, a major landowner in Pitlochry and the Pitlochry Improvements Committee. It was designed by Willie Fernie of Troon who was one the most sought after golf architects during his era. Fernie wasn’t only known in Scotland but across the UK and the continent. Willie Fernie turned two farmlands, Balnacraig and Drumchorry, into a golf course with stunning scenery.
Work at Pitlochry Golf Club started in 1908 and it was opened to the public in 1909. During the early 1920’s, another highly regarded golf architect, Major Cecil Hutchinson, updated the design of the course to what it is now.
In July 2011, a blue print for developing the course into one of the finest facilities in Highland Perthshire was unveiled. The new development plan includes a short game area, new driving range and an Academy course. The plan also includes improving the current course, creating two Par 5s, better walking paths for locals and wildlife corridors.
Golf Course
Pitlochry Golf Club isn’t only famed for its breath taking scenery but also for its tricky and challenging play. The current course stretches just less than 5,700 yards with a par of 69 for men. Ladies play at just over 5,100 yards with a par of 72.
The first three holes go up and up the steep hill and offer a tough start. The fourth hole allows a bit of rest from climbing but it’s still up hill until the sixth hole, where players are offered an impressive view of the glens. From there course regularly goes up and down.
The course has been home to the Highland Amateur Open Tournament since 1909. The tournament is held in August each year. It has also been home to golf professionals such as John Murray and Jimmy Wilson.
Pitlochry Golf Club is also proud to have Cecil Bloice, John Panton MBE, Lady Heathcoat-Amory, John Brydone, Cathy Panton-Lewis, Neil Panton and Margaret McCallum as honorary members.
